If you're considering dermabrasion in the Bay Area...
If you think dermabrasion could improve your appearance, you should
consider the following:
- Do you have any medical
conditions that could impair healing from dermabrasion?
- Are you a non-smoker?
- Are you committed to
proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, including moderate amounts of physical
exercise?
- Can you fully disclose
your health history to Dr. Mosser, including current medications, your use
of vitamin and herbal supplements, as well as your use of alcohol, tobacco,
and other drugs?
Typically, dermabrasion is performed under a local anesthesia, often combined
with a sedative. Sometimes, however, a general anesthesia will be used. Dr.
Mosser will discuss these alternatives with you well in advance of your surgery.
Though dermabrasion can be performed relatively quickly,
it’s not
uncommon for it to be performed more than once, or in stages. This is
especially true if the scarring is deep. In dermabrasion, a deeper layer of
skin, the dermis smoothed with a rotating instrument that contains
tiny diamond particles. Dr. Mosser may finish the dermabrasion treatment by applying
an ointment, a wet or waxy dressing, or some combination of these treatments.
Immediately following dermabrasion surgery, the treated skin will be red and
swollen. You may feel burning and general aching in the area. Dr. Mosser can
help control the pain with medication.
The swelling will begin to subside over the next few days, extending to a
week or so. A scab or crust may form over the treated area, which will eventually
fall off as any scab does when a new layer of skin forms underneath. Your skin
may itch as it heals. Dr. Mosser may prescribe an ointment to help with this.
He will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your skin after dermabrasion treatment.
You can expect your skin to be swollen, sensitive, and bright pink for several
weeks after dermabrasion. During this time you can return to normal activity.
You’ll
want to avoid sun and wind for at least four weeks after the procedure. And
most importantly, you must protect your skin from sun until the pigment has
completely returned to it. This can take between six and twelve months.
Results—the Amazing New You
It will take some time before you see the final results of dermabrasion in
the surface of your skin, especially if you had the procedure done simultaneously
with another cosmetic surgery, such as a face
lift. San Francisco abounds with
stores that sell cosmetics to help camouflage the pinkness in your face until
your normal skin pigment returns. The dermabrasion procedure is designed to be performed
such that when your skin finally has re-pigmented, the color has a very close
match to the surrounding skin.
