Belotero®:  The Versatile HA Filler for Every Facial Wrinkle

Belotero® is thelatest addition to an ever-expandingselection of hyaluronic acid based injectable facial and soft tissue fillers available in the United States for the treatment of wrinkles. Approved by the US FDA in November 2011, Belotero® offers some unique features which make it an extremely versatile tool in the hands of a skilled injector.

The filler is distributed in the UK and the US by Merz Pharmceuticals. Belotero® is FDA-approved for injection into the mid-to-deep dermis for correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds. In off label application Belotero®’s various formulations have has been found to be effective on everything from superficial wrinkles to lip augmentation to deep facial creases, and include even delicate under eye circles anddécolletage where other fillers are not appropriate.

Belotero® has been added to the very comprehensive inventory of injectable fillers that Dr. Scott Mosser, San Francisco plastic surgeon, uses in his state-of-the-art certified clinic in historic Union Square. Dr. Mosser is well known for his skill in devising a facial restoration treatment that is unique to each patient and specifically tailored to the results desired. He uses a precise mapping technique to ensure uniform results, and develops a treatment plan to maintain optimal results.

How is it made?

Belotero® is a Non-Animal Hyaluronic Acid (NaHA) gel designed in Switzerland by Anteis SA from biofermentation hyaluronic acid and manufactured using a unique patented process (called CPM-Cohesive Polydensified Matrix) which gives the gel an unusual elasticity which is easy to inject through a small diameter needle. Belotero® is offered in three formulations, each tailor-made for treatment of specific types of wrinkles:

  • Belotero® Basic (22.5mg/ml of NaHA) for volume enhancement treatments, deep furrows, lip augmentation, facial outlines, naso-labial furrows, glabellar lines and correction of facial depression scars caused by injury, illness or aging; injected into the medium to deep dermis using a 27G needle.
  • Belotero® Soft (20mg/ml of NaHA) for superficial wrinkles, perioral wrinkles, lip commissures, crow`s feet and forehead wrinkles; injected into the upper dermis using a 30G needle.
  • Belotero® Intense (25.5mg/ml of NaHA) for deeper lines and wrinkles; injection into the deep dermis using a 27G needle.

The Procedure

San Francisco facial rejuvenation patients favor a look that is youthful and natural without a theatrical or artificial look which sometimes results from overuse of dermal fillers, so the first step in any procedure is a consultation with Dr. Mosser to talk about goals and medical history as well as learn what options are available and suitable for your age, skin type and skin condition.

Injections made in injection sites predetermined by Dr. Mosser’s and treatments are performed in his San Francisco clinic under sterile conditions. Treatment time is short depending on the size of the areas to be treated. The effects are immediate and side effects are minimal as Belotero® is very well tolerated due to its special formulation. Some minor redness may be experienced which will soon disappear.

Belotero® is long lasting and effective from to 9 months or longer, but effectiveness can vary from patient to patient and may last longer in one facial area than in another in the same patient. Generally, it is suggested that having a treatment every six months is sufficient to maintain smooth and natural results.

Choosing the Right HC for Your Treatment

Belotero® is in the category of hyaluronic acid based fillers like Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Perlane®. Additional facial fillers based on different technologies, such as Radiesse®, Sculptra® and Artefill® are also very effective for facial rejuvenation, and of course several neurotoxin injectables such as Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® also hold an important place in wrinkle control.

An interesting Canadian study concluded in late 2010 that patients treated with a neurotoxin (onabotulinum toxin A) in combination with a hyaluronic acid cohesive gel filler showed greater improvement at all end points and most time points than patients treated with either product alone.

San Francisco facial rejuvenation patients benefit from Dr. Mosser’s expertise and experience in using a full array of cutting-edge products which give him the tools to provide them with customized treatments to obtain optimal results.

Choosing the Right Physician

Expert Injectors are board-certified plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, dermatologists and oculoplastic surgeons who demonstrate due diligence regarding patient safety, reliable results and consumer education. Certification can be from one of the following: ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), ASAPS (American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons), or ABPS (American Board of Plastic Surgeons). The ASPS estimates that fewer than 7% of US doctors are properly qualified to perform injectable procedures.

Dr. Mosser is an acknowledged expert on cosmetic injectable enhancements, and is a board certified plastic surgeon with advanced training in cosmetic rejuvenation. He has been recognized with a Platinum status with Allergan (the makers of Botox® and Juvederm®) and is considered a key opinion leader (KOL) by Merz Pharmaceuticals (the makers of Radiesse®, Xeomin® and Belotero®). Dr. Mosser was also chosen to be a trainer of other physicians by the makers of Sculptra and has been an advisor to Suneva, the makers of Artefill.

Whichever treatment Dr. Mosser designs – dermal filler, neuromodulator, or both – for your treatment you can be sure it is chosen to achieve the results you desire.
