VOLUMA® HA Filler for Long-lasting Facial Volume

image028By modern day Western standards of beauty an attractive female face is characterized by high cheekbones, smooth, rounded facial contours, hollow jowls and a tapered, well-defined jawline. This creates overall a pleasing inverted “triangle of beauty”, wide at the forehead and eyes and narrowing towards the chin.
Aging, unfortunately, results in the opposite effect. As we lose skin firmness, facial fat, hydration, and the skin’s natural elasticity, the force of gravity slowly reverses this “triangle of beauty”. Ultimately there is a narrowing of the temple areas and upper cheeks, and the sinking and sagging of the middle cheeks and jowls resulting in the appearance of a wider, heavier jawline. Illness or significant weight loss can also cause similar unwanted changes.

Dermal fillers, also referred to as injectable volumizers, can be used to restore volume. By injecting the filler under the surface layers of skin in strategic spots the sagging areas can be filled in and “lifted” to create a smoother surface and younger aspect.

The Latest Development in HA fillers

VOLUMA® is a new variation of facial filler developed as part of the Juvéderm® line of hyaluronic acid (HA) volumizers. It has been used for some time in the UK and Europe with very positive results, and has recently become available in Canada. It has not yet been approved by the US FDA for use in the United States, but approval is expected soon.

VOLUMA® was specifically developed to restore lost facial volume over the cheekbones, the temples, in the cheeks and in the chin areas resulting in a refreshed and more youthful appearing overall facial contour. It can also be used to smooth lines and wrinkles in other areas of the face.

VOLUMA® is a more viscous and thicker gel which makes is smoother than many other HA facial fillers, giving it several advantages, both in application and in final results.

Its low molecular weight makes it is easier to inject and control.
The results are long lasting, retaining a smooth, natural look and feel lasting up to 12 months.
Fewer adverse effects have been reported in studies comparing VOLUMA® to competitors’ Hyaluronic acid (HA) facial volumizers.
No migration of the filler from the intended injection sites was observed in studying the effectiveness, a great advantage both to the injector in planning specific doses and placement and to the patient as the effects last longer as dispersal and reabsorption is slower.

Results of VOLUMA® San Francsico Treatmentimage049

A study carried out by the Department of Dermatology, Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany, to assess the aesthetic use of VOLUMA® demonstrated treatment with VOLUMA® to be highly effective when measured using two recognized standards, the Ascher Scale which measures volume loss, and the GAIS (Global Aesthetic Improvement Score) which measures improvement in volume and appearance.

VOLUMA® also earned high levels of satisfaction with the results of treatment from both physicians and patients. Nearly all of the study participants stated they would be very or quite likely to return for additional treatments and would recommend the treatment to a friend.
Of great interest also is that VOLUMA® was found to last longer than most HA volumizers, with results showing that one treatment can last for anything from six to eighteen months.

How do Hyaluronic Acid Facial Fillers Work?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance occurring naturally in human cells and is responsible for maintaining tissue hydration as it assists the cells to bind or hold water and thus volume.

When a non-animal source hyaluronic acid based gel filler is injected under the facial skin using tiny gauge needles the gel acts like an inflated cushion, supporting facial structures and tissue that have lost volume or elasticity. Its water-storing properties give the surface skin a smoother, fresher look.

The Procedure

A topical anesthetic is first applied to the skin surfaces in the areas to be injected. Subcutaneous injections are then made to the deep dermis and above the periosteum (the fibrous layer that protects bones) according to a precise pattern and plan devised by the injector. The areas injected are massaged following the injections to ensure even distribution.

Because the amount of filler used, choice of site injection and technique are all critical to ensuring a balanced and aesthetic result, for people in San Francisco VOLUMA® – and any injectable – should only be carried out by a trained and experienced expert such as Dr. Scott Mosser who is Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

Patients typically return for follow up treatment about 9-12 months after the initial injection session, requiring only about half as much product as used in the initial treatment.

Side effects similar to other hyaluronic acid fillers can be expected, including swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort.
