Immediately after a Rhinoplasty surgery, patients may experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling. Splints are applied to keep the cartilage and bone anchored during healing, and gauze is packed inside the nose to keep bleeding at a minimum and keep the septum from moving.
Splints are removed 1-2 weeks post surgery, which usually relieves quite a bit of discomfort. Swelling can last up to 1 year post surgery while the cartilage, skin, and bone heal completely. You may have some bruising around the eyes for the first 1-2 weeks, although the majority of the swelling usually goes away 4-6 months post surgery. Taking certain supplements and using compresses can minimize discomfort and swelling as well, and keeping your head elevated. Talk with your surgeon as they will usually have detailed post op requirements for you to follow.
